Will it hurt?
Eyelid lifts are done under a local or general anesthesia, so pain is minimal.
How is it done?
Excess skin is removed, bulging fat is reduced, and small incisions are closed with sutures. Other related procedures include brow lifting, shortening eyelid length, lifting of the outer corner of the eye.
Will it leave a scar?
Incisions are made where the natural crease should be in the upper lids and where the lash line is in the lower lids. As a result, the scars are barely, if at all, visible.
Will I have to take time off of work or from my normal daily routine?
All stitches are removed within 7 days, and bruising will last 1-2 weeks. Swelling progressively disappears over several weeks. Makeup can be worn after the stitches are removed, and contact lenses can be worn within days.
Are there any risks?
- Hematomas – may require clot removal.
- Ectropian - scar pulls lower eyelid from the eyeball.
- Entropian - scar pulls eyelid into eyeball.
- Enophthalmos - a hollow appearance if too much fat is removed.
- Dry Eye/Wet Eye - temporary worsening if these conditions pre-dated surgery.
- Scars - may be thicker at outer corner of the eye. Usually corrects itself over a few weeks.
Eyelid surgery is a procedure to remove fat - usually along with excess skin and muscle - from the upper and lower eyelids. However, it won't remove crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. The positive results of eyelid surgery - the more alert and youthful look - will last for years. For many people, these results are permanent.
This procedure usually takes two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.
