Female Breast Reduction

Female Breast Reduction is a procedure to decrease the size of the breasts, making the breasts more firm, lifted and improved in appearance in addition to reducing the weight of the breasts.

Expected results

The breasts will be smaller, firmer and more shapely.

Will it hurt?

Female Breast Reduction is performed under a general anesthetic. The procedure can be painful but easily controlled with pain medication.

How is it done?

The most common method of reducing the breast involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision follows the natural curve of the breast.

Will it leave a scar?

The areolar and vertical scars are usually narrower than the breast fold scar. Scars improve over one year.

Will I have to take time off of work or from my normal daily routine?

Avoid stretching and lifting and reaching with your arms, as well as exercises until healing has taken place, approximately 6 weeks. Nipple sensation will gradually return in a few months. You can wear a bra once the dressing is off. Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks after surgery. Avoid stretching, lifting, and reaching with your arms.

Are there any risks?
  1. Unsatisfactory scars
  2. Asymmetry
  3. Altered nipple sensation – more common
  4. Loss of skin or nipple tissue (uncommon)
