What is a Reduction?

As the name suggests, a breast reduction is done to reduce a woman’s cup size.

By removing fat, skin, and tissue, the breasts become lighter. A breast reduction also lifts breasts and makes them firmer.

Dr. Sleightholm’s Approach to Female Breast Reductions

Dr. Sleightholm specializes in body shaping procedures, including breast reductions, and takes great pride in working with patients to understand their needs and help them achieve their desired result.

During a consultation with Dr. Sleightholm and a surgical consultant, you can expect to discuss your goals and desired results. It is important to be open and honest about your expectations during your initial meeting, as that will allow Dr. Sleightholm to make relevant, appropriate recommendations and enhance your overall satisfaction.

Dr. Sleightholm will work with you to assess your needs and determine the approach that will be best suited to you.

Typically a breast reduction involves three incisions:

  1. Around the areola
  2. Vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast
  3. Following the natural curve of the breast

Dr. Sleightholm will remove excess fat, skin, and tissue through those incisions. To meet a patient’s cosmetic desires, he will also relocate the areola.

You should expect to spend the first 48 hours after your breast reduction resting at home and avoiding any sudden or frequent arm movements. When you feel ready, you should start taking short and gentle walks to encourage good circulation. Take pain medication and antibiotics precisely as instructed in order to keep pain under control and reduce risks of infection.

Your cosmetic surgeon will request that you wear a surgical bra to support your breasts as they heal. You will be able to bathe after four days, though keep in mind that you might require assistance as your arm movements will be restricted. You can take your surgical bra off and wash it at this stage, making sure you allow it to air dry completely before putting it back on.

In general, healing takes six weeks to eight weeks after breast reduction surgery. Patients are typically able to resume normal activities (strenuous exercise included) after that time.

Surgical Procedures that Can Replace or Complement a Female Breast Reduction

Breast Lift

Liposuction

Tummy Tuck

A breast lift is a procedure to lift or elevate sagging breasts, resulting in a more youthful breast contour.

Before the procedure, patients typically have large breasts that sag due to age or weight. After the breast lift procedure, patients typically look forward to a fuller contour that is elevated. Your breasts will have a more youthful shape to meet your desired appearance.

Liposuction permanently removes excess fat in cosmetically important areas to sculpt an improved body contour. Some of the areas commonly targeted include the hips, abdomen, arms, thighs, love handles, spots around the chest, buttocks, neckline, and areas around the chin.

Liposuction is popular for both men and women, especially those who want to eliminate unwanted fat in one or a few key spots.

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess stomach fat and skin while also tightening the mid and lower abdominal muscles to reduce stomach protrusion. This helps patients achieve flatter, firmer midsections and healthier, more youthful appearances.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure to enlarge breasts by one or more cup sizes and enhance their shape. This is done by placing implants underneath the chest wall muscle or behind existing breast tissue. In either situation, the implants are centred beneath the nipples.

Frequently Asked Questions about Female Breast Reductions

How is the reduction surgery done?

Patients meet Dr. Sleightholm and a qualified consultant for a consultation. Together, you will discuss your expectations. You can expect to talk about factors such as body type, intended size, and current measurements.

The result of a breast reduction procedure depends on the patient’s desired outcomes.

Generally, reducing breast size involves three incisions:

  1. Around the areola
  2. Vertically, from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast
  3. Following the natural curve of the breast

Dr. Sleightholm removes excess fat, skin, and tissue through the incisions. To meet a patient’s cosmetic desires, he will also relocate the areola.

Will the procedure leave a scar?

Due to the incisions, patients will have scars. The areola and vertical scars are usually narrower than the breast fold scar.

They typically improve after a year.

Will a procedure hurt?

Patients receive breast reductions and lifts while under general anesthesia. After the procedure, you may feel moderate pain. However, it is easily controlled with pain medication.

Are there breast reduction risks?

There are certain risks associated with breast reductions. Thankfully, they are rare and you can contact Dr. Sleightholm with any concerns.

Procedure-related risks may include:

  • Unsatisfactory Scars: Though they do not hurt health, scar tissue may take time to improve. If they do not heal after a year, feel free to contact the clinic.
  • Asymmetry: Typically, breasts are not perfectly symmetrical before the procedure. Though this is not a health risk, slight asymmetry may remain after undergoing a breast lift and reduction operation. However, Dr. Sleightholm puts a great amount of care into making breasts as symmetrical as possible.
  • Altered Nipple Sensation: Compared to what they’re used to, patients may experience slightly different nipple sensation. In uncommon cases, sensation is slightly reduced after the initial recovery period.
  • Loss of Skin or Nipple Tissue: This is a rareside effect of breast reduction surgery.
Will I have to take time off work or my daily routine?

In total, healing takes about six weeks after the breast reduction surgery.

But many patients return to work in a week or two. Regardless, avoid lifting, stretching, and reaching with your arms. You must also abstain from exercise.

You can wear a bra once the dressing is off. Shortly after – in a few months – nipple sensation will gradually return.
