How Lip Fillers and Injections Work

As we age, the face naturally loses volume and elasticity, including in the lips. Prolonged sun exposure can also contribute to the development of wrinkles and uneven lines on the lips.

Fillers are a non-surgical way of adding volume and creating symmetry in the lips. At Brampton Cosmetic, we use hyaluronic acid-based fillers to achieve a hydrated, natural looking pout. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found within the body and is completely safe to use.

The Benefits of Lip Filler

Many individuals choose to use lip fillers to boost their confidence, balance their facial symmetry, and enhance their smile. Fillers are a non-invasive lip enhancement option that requires minimal downtime. Depending on your goals, lip fillers can:

  • Define your lip border for a sharp, beautiful contour.
  • Achieve facial balancing and harmony.
  • Correct lip asymmetry.
  • Emphasize your cupid’s bow.
  • Reduce the visibility of gums when smiling.

It typically takes 0.5mL-2.00mL of lip filler to create a defined yet natural pout.

In addition to this being a non-invasive treatment, lip fillers can also be dissolved, meaning it is a non-permanent solution.

Lip Flips versus Dermal Lip Fillers

Lip flips and lip fillers are two different lip enhancement techniques. They both produce fuller-looking lips.

A lip flip involves injecting a small amount of Botox above the lip. It is ideal for individuals wanting to reduce a “gummy” smile and give the illusion that their upper lip is fuller.

Lip fillers actually add volume to the lips with the injection of hyaluronic acid-based fillers.

We offer both treatments at Brampton Cosmetic and when you schedule a consultation, we’ll be able to determine which option is best for you.

Lip Filler Styles and Techniques We Use

Our licensed nurse injectors offer four different kinds of techniques. We always take a personalized approach to lip enhancement to complement your unique features.

Natural

The natural lip style is perfect for those looking for subtle enhancement. This technique focuses on preserving the natural shape of your lips while adding hydration and a slight plump. The goal is to enhance your existing features without creating an exaggerated look. This style is ideal for anyone wanting a refreshed appearance without dramatically altering their lips.

Russian and Ukrainian Lips

For a bold and defined look, the Russian or Ukrainian lip style is the perfect choice. This technique emphasizes a pronounced cupid’s bow and fuller lips, creating a striking, statement-making appearance.

These styles are for those who desire a more noticeable transformation, making them stand out. Whether you’re looking for a more structured shape or dramatic volume, this technique delivers stunning results tailored to your preferences.

Mini Lip Filler

If you’re new to lip filler, the mini lip is a great starting point. Using only half a syringe, this technique provides gentle hydration and a subtle plump without a bold transformation.

The mini lip filler is ideal for first-timers who want to dip their toes into the world of fillers or those seeking a light enhancement. It’s a low-commitment way to achieve soft, natural-looking results.

Same-Day Dissolve and Inject

For clients dealing with excess filler or migration, our same-day dissolve and inject technique offers a comprehensive solution. This method involves dissolving old filler and re-injecting fresh filler in a single session. By addressing the issue immediately, you won’t need to wait weeks between dissolving and re-injecting. The result is a rejuvenated, symmetrical look with a well-defined cupid’s bow and plump lips.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lip Fillers

Are Lip Fillers Safe?

Yes, lip fillers are completely safe. The fillers we use are hyaluronic acid-based, which is a substance naturally found within the body. All of our nurse injectors are trained and certified.

Can lip fillers be reversed?

Yes, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved. This is done by injecting enzymes called hyaluronidase, which breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the filler. The process can take several hours to a few days to complete.

Are there risks associated with lip injections and fillers?

Lip injections can cause minor side effects including swelling, itchiness, bruising, and mild pain. Conditions should subside within the first two weeks (often within the first few days).

If symptoms worsen, contact us.

How long do lip fillers last?

On average, most lip fillers can last from 6 to 12 months. The longevity of your fillers depends on your body and lifestyle. For example, smokers may require more frequent touch ups than non-smokers.

Can I eat or drink after receiving lip fillers?

We advise clients to wait until after the topical anesthetic wears off. This way, you won’t accidentally bite your lips when eating. We also recommend you avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Alcohol thins your blood and could exaggerate any bruising.

Additionally, you should avoid drinking with straws or smoking for at least 24 hours so that the filler isn’t disturbed.

When can I return to work and begin normal activities

We recommend avoiding strenuous activities, not sleeping on the injection site, and advise you to rest with the head elevated immediately after the procedure.

Overall, dermal injections don’t require much downtime. We encourage you to return to work and daily activities once symptoms subside.

Can I receive lip injections if I am prone to or have cold sores?

If you suffer from the herpes simplex virus (cold sores), please make sure you advise us. We will ask you about this prior to your treatment and on your health questionnaire.

In most cases we will advise against receiving lip injections if you have active cold sores, as that can cause the rashes to spread. If the virus has been dormant for some time, we still require that you take any medication that has been prescribed both before and after any treatment sessions to reduce the risk of reactivating it. Brampton Cosmetic can provide you with a prescription for an antiviral medication if required.
